Gun laws are changing for Alabama starting August 1st. That's when Senate bill 286 will go into effect. Morgan County Sheriff Ana Franklin held a town hall type meeting in Lacey's Spring Monday evening to answer and address any issues and concerns that citizens have.

"I like to try and take things head on and be as proactive as I can when we know that we've got some new issues that will truly impact the public and what we've been used to seeing for the last several years in our area," said Sheriff Franklin.

Franklin said it's important to make sure that everyone knows what rights they have when it comes to their weapon.

"After August 1st, open carry will be where, there's always been discrepancies between law enforcement and different factions. That is a law now, that open carry is allowed in Alabama on premises not your own in public places. The biggest change is going to be that 18-year-olds, will be permitted to have a concealed carry permit and a open carry is going to be maybe the norm now in Alabama and that no pistol permit is required for open carry."

Big changes that are good news to some Tennessee Valley residents like Steven Moore. He drove from Cullman to make sure he knew his rights.

"I like the changes but then I like carrying my gun and being protected so there will be those who probably don't agree," he said.

There will be several other gun law forums held throughout North Alabama over the next few weeks.
