HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A man who police said was beaten in the middle of the street overnight, has died.

Police said two men got into a fight with the victim around 10:30 p.m. Thursday in the 2400 block of Shepherd Drive in Huntsville. Investigators said one of the men involved in the fight was armed with a stick.

Officers said when they responded to the scene, they found the victim, Joseph Michael Atkinson, lying in the roadway, unresponsive. Atkinson was transported to Huntsville Hospital by HEMSI and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

According to authorities, the suspects took off in a black Ford F-150 pickup truck.

Shortly after 6 a.m. Friday, one of the offenders, 34-year-old Jamie King of Huntsville, called police and turned himself in to authorities. He was then interviewed and arrested.

Police took a second man, 40-year-old Thomas Martin of Huntsville, into custody for questioning. He's been charged with murder, attempting to elude a police officer, and domestic violence.
