ACES program gives summer fun to kids in the Shoals

SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) -

Sheffield Police want kids to stay in school and out of trouble, with the help of the weeklong Alternative Choices, or ACES program.

The program, made possible through the association of the police department and the Sheffield Housing Authority, gives at-risk kids an opportunity at some summer fun they might not get to experience otherwise.

Tons of smiles and laughter filled the air Thursday as kids took part in field day activities. Not only did the kids play tug-of-war against their local first responders – the kids won best of three, by the way – but they also got to talk with firefighters, learn about safety in the home, how to say no to drugs, and more.

The week-long program builds confidence in all of the campers. "These are the formative years, and if we can instill good choices at a younger age, maybe when they get older they'll make good choices, and they won't have to interact with us in a different type of setting," said Henry Green of Sheffield Police.

The special week wraps up Friday with a trip to Point Mallard.
