LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

An emergency meeting was called for Thursday evening as Lawrence County commissioners took steps to allow them to pay the bills through the rest of the fiscal year.

The county's general fund is roughly $700,000 over budget right now. They have been waiting on more than a quarter of a million dollars in FEMA money connected to the 2011 tornado outbreak. That would help make up some of the difference.

The county also applied for a line of credit at the end of June. The processing of that request has been completed, and commissioners are expected to okay entering into the agreement with the bank at this meeting.

"We've got to get with our department heads, see what they need, see what we can cut. We're going to have to live within our means," said Commission Chair Prentis Davis. "That's what we're responsible for, that's what we're elected to do, and we've got to be accountable."

Whatever money is used from that line of credit is expected to be repaid with ad valorem tax revenue by the end of the year. That money starts being collected in October.
