HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville Police arrested a man accused of raping a 4-month-old infant.

Anthony Dean Blackwell, 24 of Huntsville, was booked into the Metro Jail early Friday morning. Investigators said Huntsville officers were called to South Square near Voodoo Lounge around 1 a.m. for a report of a subject matching Blackwell's description.

Witnesses flagged down the officer at the intersection of Westside Square and Fountain Circle and told him that Blackwell was running from the scene. The officer chased the subject and caught up with him. Blackwell complied and was taken into custody.

He was booked into the Metro Jail and a hold was placed on him.

Blackwell was wanted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Pulaski Police Department on one count of rape of a child. Investigators said Blackwell is accused of raping the child while he was babysitting on June 9.

When the infant's mother returned home, she noticed signs of trauma later determined to be injuries suffered from sexual abuse. The victim underwent surgery to repair the injuries.

Investigators said Blackwell has a criminal history that includes public intoxication, reckless driving, evading arrest, vandalism, traffic and noise violations, and driving under the influence.

because the victim is under three years old the charge is upgrade from rape of a child to aggravated rape of a child. Instead of a 25-year maximum sentence Blackwell faces up to 60-years behind bars if convicted.

"It's just almost incomprehensible that anybody could do something like this to child that young," said 22nd Tennessee Judicial District Attorney Mike Bottoms. "It just makes your blood boil."
