Work continues on new rail cars. Work continues on new rail cars.

A ceremony was held Wednesday to unveil the first railcar produced from a Shoals plant.

Production has started at the FreightCar America plant, and crews are laying the tracks for the future. Wednesday, officials unveiled the first completed railcar from the plant.

Community leaders said the start of production at the plant will boost the economy not just in Colbert County, but across the Shoals and the Tennessee Valley at large.

"We've got so many little jobs that can spring off a major company like this, and people in the community are really excited about the possibilities," said County Commissioner Charles Hovater. "The housing industry is picking up, and a lot of the local restaurants and stores are reaping the benefits of people coming to the area."

With nearly 70 employees hired for the start-up phase, plant officials are planning to bring that number into the hundreds. A goal number of 400-500 was stated.

It's a large boost for a small community with a rich past and a promising future.

Prospective employees can apply for a job at Freightcar America online through AIDT.
