LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

According to Limestone County officials, thieves are stealing county property. Nearly a dozen large metal storm drain covers have been stolen near Old Railroad Bed Road and Grand Road.

The drain covers started turning up missing at the beginning of July. They cost the county about $150 apiece, but are worth about half of that at a scrap yard.

Since the thefts, the county has replaced them with steel covers. They also had them engraved to say Limestone County.

"When (the county engineer) put the new ones down, he tack-welded them, as well as the rest of them in that area," said Limestone County Commissioner Steve Turner. "So, I'm not saying they can't get them anymore. I'm just saying it's going to be a lot harder for them to get them this next time."

Taxpayers are footing the bill to replace the storm drain covers.
