DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

There are seven new police officers on the beat in Decatur. The group took their oath to serve and protect Tuesday morning.

They will now go out for eight weeks of field training with veteran officers before heading to 12 more weeks of police academy training.

The Decatur Police Chief noted that his department didn't need all seven officers, but all seven were hired based on their performance.

With the new hires, Decatur has 137 officers protecting the streets.
