HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Seven months into 2013 and there have been 15 homicides so far in the city of Huntsville.

"It's a little higher than average for this time of year," said Sgt. Jerry King with the major crimes division of HPD. "It's about where we stand generally for our yearly statistics."

The 15th homicide came just Monday morning when 16-year-old Robert Hewlett was killed in an overnight shooting. Huntsville Police have solved 12 of the 15 murders, but the latest incident brings the count of unsolved killings to three.

"For this year we have Alonzo McGhee case that's still open and active," he said.  McGhee was found fatally shot in January in front of his Owens Cross Roads home. His murder was Huntsville's first homicide investigation of 2013.

"The Johnson brother's that's still open and active," he said.  Terry and Anthony Jackson were found stabbed inside the West Huntsville United Methodist Church on May 21st.

Sgt. King said all the murders this year are spread out throughout the city and all have different motives.  The most common motives are robberies or drugs.

"It is disheartening that we have reached that and have the potential of exceeding that by the end of the year," he said.

He said that his squad will continue to work on the cases that are open and hope that the rest of the year is quiet and murder free.

"We are diligent in our process of bringing all of these offenders to justice," he said. "Our arrest rate is really high on a national level and our conviction rate is even higher."

If you have any information that could help solve any of the open cases, give officers a call.
