PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) -

Phase one of a resurfacing paving job at Prattville High School has yet to phase into reality. The problem is it's too wet and has been for awhile with the constant rains the River Region's been getting in recent weeks.

For Glenn Luker it is merely a waiting game. Nothing can be done on this $72,000 job until it quits raining and the puddles dry up.

"We have to wait until this dries out and it's pushed the county back on their projects," said Luker, Autauga County School District Construction Coordinator.

The Prattville High School paving project isn't the only job being held up by the weather. It's a similar story in Wetumpka.

Mayor Jerry Willis can't remember when the grass was cut the last time. On parts of Highway 231 the grass is knee high.

"They're really battling. The crew maintains our cemetery and right-of-ways, so this has pushed them back," said Willis.

A part of Highway 14 between Prattville and Wetumpka was supposed to have been completed weeks ago but delayed because of the weather.

It's rained at least in 12 of the last 14 days. Union Springs, for example, has received more than 9 inches of rain in July. Opp has gotten between 10 to 12 inches of rain.

On Simmons Road behind the Prattville airport George Williams has no choice but stare at a muddy mess. Williams says the dirt road needs to be raised by three feet to prevent wash out and so crews can gain access to two large culverts that run underneath the runway.

"It's really important to us because we have to get access to those grates because they often get cluttered with debris during a heavy rain," said Williams, Director of Maintenance for the city of Prattville.

Autauga County School Superintendent Spence Agee isn't too concerned for the moment about the resurfacing job because the new school year doesn't begin for another 5 weeks.

Mayor Jerry Willis is choosing to look on the bright side of things.

"Our flowers sure are pretty. They're getting plenty of water," said Willis.
