HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A 16-year old was killed and another teen was injured in a shooting early Monday morning.

Police said they responded to a call around 2 a.m. Monday reporting the sounds of gunfire and then a car crash in the area of Belvoir Drive and Bluecrest Street. When they arrived, they found two teenage victims in a wrecked car. Officers said one victim was shot in the neck, the other in the chest.

HEMSI took the teens to Huntsville Hospital, where 16-year-old Robert Dante Hewlett died from his injuries. The other teen is expected to recover.

Officers said a man was seen running from the scene. An officer followed. Minutes later, police received a call about a break-in at a nearby apartment.

The man matched the description of the man seen running from the shooting scene, police said. Officers responded to the apartment and took the man into custody.

Police have taken three people into custody, but no charges have been filed yet.

This is the 15th homicide this year.
