Businesses offer Furlough Friday deals to Arsenal employees

Local businesses will be offering Furlough Friday deals to Arsenal employees. Local businesses will be offering Furlough Friday deals to Arsenal employees.

Friday completes the first furlough week for arsenal employees. The furloughs mean that some workers will go at least one day a week without pay for the next few months.

Businesses owners are taking the shift into consideration and are doing what they can to help.

"If we can kind of lighten their burden just a little bit as they support us, we'd like to return the favor just a little bit," said Fubar owner Mickey Summerford.

At least 15,500 Redstone Arsenal civilian employees will be affected by furloughs.  Summerford said 50% of his customers are Arsenal employees, so he decided to cut his clientele a deal, since their paychecks are seeing cuts.

"If they show their ID and show that they are qualified, then they will get in for free, and on their bar tabs it will be a 20% discount over the whole bar tab, whatever that happens to be," he said.

This isn't the only business that has a Furlough Friday plan in place. West End Grill near Bridge Street is offering an identical deal.

"Basically, on Fridays we are going to offer a 20% discount off people's tabs if they show their government ID," said West End Grill owner, Brian Ham.

Summerford said he understands that when the purse strings tighten, entertainment is usually the first thing to go.

"We're not a necessity," he said.  "The groceries and the diapers - those are a necessity. We're basically entertainment, but people do need a release. This world is kind of hectic, so if we could make it a little easier for them to enjoy themselves, then we'd like to."

Summerford said he hopes the Furlough Fridays will prompt other businesses to offer similar deals to those impacted by the budget cuts.
