MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

The director of the Madison Animal Rescue Foundation says finding a dog in a dumpster is a first, but finding a dog in such bad condition is not.

Madison Police are still looking for the person who left a pit bull in a dumpster. A business owner found the dog in near-death condition behind the Spencer Square shopping center on Madison Boulevard Wednesday.

A vet treated the 3-year-old pit bull for dehydration, vertigo, and infections. Police believe the dog was being used as bait for fighting.

MARF is housing nearly one dozen recently rescued dogs just like Jedi, at a boarding facility. The dogs have all suffered severe abuse. Many were used to fight, or used as bait for fighting.

They have all required intensive care by a veterinarian, however these dogs will have lifelong issues due to their abuse. That's why the Madison Animal Rescue Foundation has a very strict adoption process.

"It's a big responsibility when you take in a dog with issues. There are a lot of people out there who are perfectly capable of doing it, but we work very hard to make sure we match the dog with the right kind of person," said Miki Bennett, the director of MARF.

The incident brings to light a problem for pet owners in Madison County.

Bennett says many dogs like Jedi are stolen for dog fighting, usually Pit Bulls or Boxers, because people don't want to pay for them.

"We have gotten a number of bait dogs. We don't usually get fighting dogs because they want to keep them, but the bait dogs once they get injured, they dump them," said Bennett.

Bennett says the best way to keep your dog from being stolen is to keep it inside when you are not home.
