BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Three boaters in Jefferson County were located safely on Thursday morning after going missing on Wednesday.

Dewey Isbell, his son, Andrew, and Andrew's girlfriend, Shannon Dunn, were on Valley Creek around noon on Wednesday at John's Rd near Bessemer. They were located around 4 a.m. Thursday on Lock 17 Road near Hueytown.

Authorities say the trio was caught up in Wednesday afternoon's storms after getting lost. Before the storms, Dunn was able to contact her mother, but the call dropped. No other contact was made as their cell phones got wet when the boat flipped during the storms.

The authorities were contacted and the search began. The boaters say they were able to see the search crews, but the crews could not see the boaters due to darkness. Around 4 a.m., they were able to make it out of the water when they saw the Lock 17 bridge.

Dunn's mother, Cindy Taylor, cried tears of happiness to see her daughter safely returned.

"Out of the truck I came screaming and hollering," said Taylor. "(It is) The happiest thing I've ever seen in my life other than the day she was born."

Reflecting back, these three say they have learned some valuable lessons from this fishing trip.

"Always dress warmer, have water proof matches, and a plastic bag for your cell phones," said Dunn, discussing how to prevent such troubles in the future.

"Get a map and learn where you're at first and how long it takes to get somewhere," said Dewey Isbell.
