MPS releases rendered drawings of what LAMP, MTec would look like at old Montgomery Mall location

Posted: Updated:
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Montgomery Public Schools may soon have new space inside the old Montgomery Mall building. Tuesday The county board of education reviewed a proposal to move Montgomery Technical Education Center, or MTec, and Loveless Academic Magnet Program High, or LAMP, to the old mall.

Under the proposal, MTec would move into what used to be the JC Penny's building, which the school board has already approved to purchase, and LAMP would go be in the old Parisian building.

LAMP and M-Tech would operate independently with their own entrances, cafeterias, libraries, classroom, and parking areas.

Board members say the space, more than 160,000 square feet, is needed and is a good move for students.

The proposal also includes purchasing 11 acres of additional property that would used for an athletic field, gym and offices.

School Board member Beverly Ross (District 7) believes the board will approve the proposal.

Wednesday, the school system released artist renderings of the construction.

The board is also considering locating some central office buildings there in a move that would save the system a million dollars. The money would be saved by making the additional space house the district's logistics, security, information technology, maintenance and operations departments; potentially eliminating the need for several central office buildings.

The board will consider the proposal later this month.
