HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Starting this year, some sixth graders will be required to get another vaccination.

Alabama health officials say students age eleven and older entering the sixth grade will need to be vaccinated against whooping cough.

Whooping cough is highly contagious and can be fatal. Students going into seventh through ninth grade will need to have the vaccination if they did not get it during the past school year.

73 cases of whooping cough were reported during the first six months of 2013.
