BRIDGEPORT, AL (WAFF) -

A judge has rendered a verdict over an election fight in Bridgeport.

Leon Dave claimed in his contest that Mayor-elect David Hughes was ineligible to run because of his employment with the city's utility company. However, the judge ruled that he did not serve in a managerial capacity, and therefore eligible to serve as Mayor.

Dave also contested Place Five candidate Clarence "Boo" Walker's win, citing that he did not live in the city limits. While there was a city map depicting the residence as outside the city limits, the court ruled that the city's original map of 1906 showed Walker's property was in fact in the city limits.

For the mayor, he is pleased to get this behind him. "It was a relief because it's hard to govern right if you've got stuff in the back of your mind like that," Hughes said. "It's just aggravating. I'm glad it's over, and my family is too."

Attempts to reach Dave were unsuccessful.

Walker was killed in a motorcycle accident while traveling back to Bridgeport in May. Last week in a special meeting, the city council appointed his son, Clarence Walker, Jr., to serve out the remainder of the term. He was sworn in Monday night.
