Commuters can expect to see more traffic delays around Redstone Arsenal gates Thursday morning.

Arsenal officials said they are short-staffed because of furloughs, which have caused lanes to close, creating long lines and headaches for drivers.

People who work on Redstone Arsenal experienced major traffic delays Wednesday morning. Traffic was backed up at Gate 9 at Research Park.

Huntsville Police urged motorists to use alternative gates to get to the Arsenal and to use different routes to avoid delays.

In a news release, Arsenal officials said the traffic congestion at Redstone Arsenal's Access Control Points is growing as the effects of the first week of furlough are felt.

Arsenal officials said they are required to reduce manning at gates throughout the week in order to furlough guard employees.

"We have to spread the furlough for guards throughout the week; we can't simply shut down post on Friday," said Mike Sheehy, Director of Emergency Services. "We've programmed the major reductions for Fridays but still feel the impact throughout the week."

Officials suggest employees leave for work earlier than usual and that they to be prepared to wait while traffic is slow.

"What we ask is for everyone to be patient during this adjustment. We'll continue to assess and adjust within our defined constraints," said Col. John S. Hamilton, Garrison Commander, Redstone Arsenal. "It's difficult for us all but we'll continue to strive for improvement."
