FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

McFarland Park has been closed by the Police Department in expectation of rising waters along the Tennessee River.

A police spokeswoman said the Tennessee Valley Authority notified the department Saturday morning that it will be opening spillways at Wilson Dam to ease flooding upstream. She said campers in the riverfront park are being asked to leave for their safety.

North central Alabama has been inundated with heavy rain the past three days, with some locations getting as much as nine inches. Several area July 4 events were canceled due to the rain, but Florence's Spirit of Freedom Festival and fireworks show went on as scheduled.

City park employees were placing trash cans atop picnic tables and securing loose objects Saturday morning in advance of the flood waters.
