No flood insurance, no help, say Limestone residents

Several homeowners in Limestone County said they feel duped after being told they didn't need flood insurance, only to find themselves out of pocket after Thursday's torrential rains.

Water levels at one residence got so high Thursday, it began to pour into crawl spaces and nearly into the home. While the water has since receded, the effects of the flood remain. Damage could total into the tens of thousands.

Beth Crabtree spent Friday stacking sand bags around her house. A nearby creek rose dangerously fast, and even with sand bags, several inches of water got into her home, damaging some of her property.

Some newcomers to the area whose property sustained water damage will have to go without the help of insurance claims, after being led to believe they were in an area that didn't necessitate flood coverage.

"I was told this wasn't in Tornado Alley, and we've had three tornadoes come within a half mile of here," said homeowner James Trent. "I was told no flooding and no crime. There's been no crime, but there's flooding and tornadoes."

Commissioner Steve Turner said the county is not legally responsible for most of the damage because it is on private property. Workers were sent out all night Thursday and into Friday morning surveying drainage pipes and other damage along public roadways and properties. He said large logs and other debris will be removed no later than Monday.

Turner believes it is unlikely that larger drainage pipes will be installed any time soon, because flooding situations such as this week's, in which large amounts of rain fall in such a short timeframe, are rare.
