TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Mayor Mike Bell's office says the city has determined what caused a sinkhole to swallow a woman's car with her inside on Detroit Avenue Wednesday.

Mayor Bell's office says a broken sewer line caused soil to wash away, leaving a hollow cavern under the road.  The failure happened at a crossover section between a 30 and a 36 inch sewer line, according to the mayor's office. Both lines were constructed in 1891.

Toledo Fire and rescue crews had to lower a ladder into the sinkhole to rescue 60-year-old Pamela Knox. Knox was miraculously unharmed.

"You know, I was just calling on the name of Jesus. I was saying Jesus, Jesus, Jesus until the car came to a stop," said Knox.

Knox says she sat in her car for about 20 minutes before fire crews arrived.

"It was sounds of stone and rocks just clashing and falling," Knox said. "I was very concerned that I might not make it out. Then water started coming into my car."

When crews did arrive, they dropped a ladder into the sinkhole. A firefighter climbed down into the hole, and guided Knox onto the ladder before climbing out behind her.

Knox says the scare has brought her closer to her husband of 26 years.

"We're learning not to take each day for granted. Each day that we are given is a blessing from the lord," said Knox.

Repairs on the sewer line and roadway are expected to take until the middle or end of next week. The intersections of Monroe and Detroit, Bancroft and Detroit, Detroit and Horace, Bancroft and Forest and Bancroft and Sylvania are all closed.
