MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The former executive director of the Marshall County Convention and Visitors Bureau is under investigation for misappropriation of funds.

After more than 20 years in that office, Lisa Socha was fired nearly three months ago. Socha handled special event funding which included a $1 surcharge on lodging as well as a 25-cent surcharge on campsites. She also handled the lodging taxes that provided the operational funding for the organization.

Board Chairman Tim McRae said that annual budget was close to $150,000. He declined to comment on the specifics of what the investigation has uncovered but said it has been reported to authorities.

"When we realized there was something in question, Ms. Socha was dismissed in April of this year for not following policies and procedures," said McRae. "Upon further investigation, we decided it was in the best interest to contact law enforcement in concern of the financial management of our operation."

District Attorney Steve Marshall said they cannot confirm or deny any investigation conducted by his office. Calls to Socha were not returned.
