Compromise to farmers market hours issue

A solution may finally ease concerns from farmers who say they were losing thousands over restricted hours at the Madison County Farmers Market.

Earlier this year, the county commission cut down the operating hours at the market because they said they were losing money. Farmers, in turn, lost money because their produce was spoiling before they had a chance to sell it.

After hearing the farmers' complaints loud and clear, the commission decided to open the market from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. This gives farmers 54 hours per week with which to sell their crops.

Commission Chairman Dale Strong said they needed to be smart because taxpayer dollars are supplementing the market with $90,000 just to operate, but he sees this decision as the best compromise. "Farmers can bring their producer here and sell it to the people that are coming and these are the first of other modifications that are forthcoming," Strong said. "The commission is very committed to make sure that it is a successful program."
