HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

If you want to train to be a police officer in Huntsville, now's your chance to apply. Huntsville Police Department is accepting applications for its next academy, which begins in February.

Applicants have until July 24th to apply. You must be a U.S. citizen and at least 21-years-old by the time you graduate.

HPD's director of training said they're looking for a diverse pool of applicants.

"We work long days. Do a lot of physical training. It's strenuous work, strenuous training, but it's rewarding training once you get through and graduate," said Lt. Darryl Lawson.

The department already received about 600 applicants. Last year, a little more than a thousand people applied.
