Exonerated pro boxer opening gym in Albany

Pro boxer Yathomas Riley has faced adversity many could never dream of.

Following false allegations by an ex-girlfriend, Thomas was jailed on charges of attempted murder.

But after her statement continued to change, investigators dropped the charges against Riley, setting him free after two years in jail for a crime he didn't commit.

Riley has since moved to Albany and resumed his pro boxing career.

But now, he wants to give back as well.

"For me to go through what I went through in life, this is one of the things that I wanted to do," Riley says. "This is what makes me happy, and I'm very excited to do this."

Riley's Gym will offer free training programs to kids ages 7-16.

He says it's not just about boxing.

The sport can teach discipline, respect, and also gives kids a chance to get active, he says.

But the training programs are about opportunities.

Riley says trainers gave him a chance to find something when he was a kid. Now he wants to return the favor.

"What I'm doing is giving back and giving a kid an opportunity," Riley says. "Someone gave me that opportunity, so I'm going to give another kid that opportunity. Hopefully he'll run with it and take advantage of it."

Riley's Gym will host a Grand Opening Wednesday, July 3, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

The gym is located in the Village Green Shopping Center on Dawson Rd.

Training is also offered to adults at a small fee.
