GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The Guntersville Police Department wants a new boat, but the city council tabled a motion to approve the funds and now time is running out.

Surrounded by water, the Guntersville Police Department said they currently have no way of dealing with an emergency on the water should one arise. Because it has become a port city, grant funding is being made available for homeland security grants.

Guntersville Police Chief Jim Peterson said the boat would be equipped for chemical and other hazardous situations on the water. Peterson said it would also allow them to better serve their residents on a much more practical level and be available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Cost to the city for the half-million dollar boat is just over $40,000, roughly the price for a new bass boat.

Peterson said just a few months remain before the grant expires.
