RUSSELLVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Someone stole more than $5,000 from a Russellville nursing home and, according to police, it was an inside job.

Police said it started when officials at Burns Nursing Home noticed numbers in their financial records weren't adding up.

Samantha Montgomery, 44, was arrested and charged with first degree theft by deception.

Investigators said Montgomery took checks from residents who were paying their monthly fees, made some of them out to cash and then deposited the money into a personal bank account.

Investigators allege Montgomery then altered the records to show the residents paid their dues, although the money was never deposited.

The case is still ongoing. Authorities said there is a chance the amount of money stolen could increase.

WAFF 48 News tried to contact the director of the nursing home but he denied to comment on the case.
