Cleaner communities is something we all should strive for. Last week the Town of Sheffield made cleaning up neighborhoods a top priority. If you are a property owner in Sheffield you can apply to have your dilapidated homes and buildings torn down at no cost to you. They hope this program will help make the city more appealing to the eyes. The city will use a $250,000 grant to demolish select houses and buildings in the area. To qualify, the homes have to have been vacant for at least 90 days and have been deemed a nuisance or an eyesore to the city and surrounding neighbors. If a property is selected for this program, city officials will have workers come in, demolish the property, and then turn it over to the original owners. According to the grant, the city is required to pay 20% of the demolition cost. Property owners have until August 1 to submit their applications. Hopefully similar programs can be adopted by other communities in our area to clean up neighborhoods and potentially attract business.
