Search on for missing swimmer in Lake Pontchartrain

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WWL-TV) -

Police are searching areas of Lake Pontchartrain near Beauregard Avenue and Lakeshore Drive for a 50-year-old man who went under the water around 4:30 p.m. and has not been seen since.

Police say the swimmer went under the water in the location near where Bayou St. John meets the lake. In addition to police, the U.S. Coast Guard is on the scene with a chopper in addition to boats in the search.

Police said a relative member became concerned about family members swimming in the choppy conditions and advised them to get out. The spokesperson said that as the man began heading toward shore, he started to have trouble swimming and went underwater.
