ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

A faulty air conditioner is believed to have started a fire in a home that an Athens resident was moving into Saturday.

Firefighters responded to a call at the 1800 block of Estate Drive from a satellite TV installer at the home. He reported hearing popping noises from inside the home, then seeing flames and smoke from a nearby air conditioning unit.

The fire was quickly contained. A sun room sustained heavy smoke damage. There was minor smoke damage throughout the rest of the home.

Investigators believe this may have been an electrical fire based on the installer's reports and the location of the AC unit in relation to the sun room. An official cause has not been determined.

The owner of the home was reported to have only begun moving in the same day.
