HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The reward for information in catching the killer of Alonzo McGhee has nearly tripled to $17,000.

McGhee was found fatally shot in January in front of his Owens Cross Roads home. His murder was Huntsville's first homicide investigation of 2013.

Huntsville Area Crime Stoppers originally offered a $1,000 reward. McGhee's family also put up $5,000 for any information leading to the arrest of his killer.

Authorities said his family was able to recently raise even more money to bring the reward total to $17,000. Huntsville Police said they are following up on every tip they receive and they are committed to catching his killer.

"Our investigation is proceeding," said Dr. Harry Hobbs of the Huntsville Police Department. "We are still gathering information, still interviewing people, and we are going to continue to work this case and use all of our resources."

McGhee was a standout football player at Georgia Southern before becoming a lieutenant colonel in the Army.
