BIRMINGHAM, AL (WSFA) - Paula Deen's cooking empire continues to crumble, but at least one of her corporate partners is sticking with her. And the company is based in Alabama.
Sears, JC Penny and Walgreen's are the latest to cut ties with the embattled television chef. There is also word that her publisher will not release her next cookbook.
The parting of ways comes after Deen admitted to using a racial slur during a legal deposition. She said she used the 'n-word' decades ago to describe a black man who robbed her.
The deposition also includes a story by Deen, in which she longed to cater a southern plantation-like dinner with only African-American waiters. She denies the plaintiff's claim that she fostered a discriminatory work environment.
Many of Deen's fans say her admissions, while not socially or politically acceptable, still do not rise to a level that should ruin her. And her magazine publisher tends to agree.
Birmingham-based Hoffman Media released a statement Friday indicating it will continue to produce Deen's magazine.
Executive Vice President Eric Hoffman wrote:
"We are aware of the hurt that has been generated in the media in recent weeks. To be clear, Hoffman Media does not condone the use of offensive, discriminatory language or behavior. With that said, we feel that Ms. Deen's apology for past indiscretions was heartfelt and genuine."
