The Fourth of July is right around the corner. Soon, fireworks will start to fly off the shelves but before you spark that sparkler, firefighters want to make sure you are safe.

Firefighters said at least 50 percent of the fires they respond to over the holiday are firework-related.

"The Fourth of July is a busy day for us and nationwide there are more fires that occur on the 4th of July than any other day of the year," said Deputy Chief of the Madison Fire Department, Cary Sadler.  "Most of them are grass and brush fires but there have been some structure fires related to fireworks," he said.

Fireworks are forbidden in some city limits like Huntsville and Madison-but for areas where they aren't Sadler has these suggestions to keep you safe.

"If people are going to shoot those in areas where it is legal, of course under all circumstances only adults should be the ones to actually use the fireworks and set them off," he said.  "You need to make sure that everybody is away and never attempt to light one that does not go off."

Sadler suggests keeping a bucket of water nearby when you're done with your fireworks, that way you can safely put them out with no worries of them relighting and starting a fire.

The countdown to the holiday is on which means firework sales will skyrocket.

"This should be the first weekend that sales pick up," said County Line fireworks owner Stacey Haraway.

Haraway is also stressing safety for those who buy any of his merchandise.

"Fireworks are something that are dangerous but as long as you are careful with them and don't get in the middle of dry fields or things along those lines and take precautions, they can be safe if you are safe with them," he said.

Firefighters said if you want to really be safe, just go to a public showing of fireworks for the holiday. On July 4th at Dublin Park, fireworks will be on display once the sun starts to set.
