DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The DeKalb County School System is getting it's first-ever Pre-K program and it's all thanks to a $120,000 state grant.

School officials at Plainview School are working toward getting the details finalized on the Pre-K program that will begin at the school this fall. A classroom has already been cleared out and is ready for use for the new program.

The grant will allow 18 kids to enter the program at the age of four. A new teacher and aide will also be hired to conduct the class of students.

Because the demand is high, a raffle will be held to determine who the 18 children are that will be able to attend.

School officials said the program helps give kids a head start.

"It just gets them started, more acclimated to the process of being in school and probably introduced to some things in pre-k that normally it would be kindergarten before they got those skills," said Plainview School Principal, Rita Barksdale.

An announcement is expected Monday on how parents can apply to have their children in the class.
