LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Currently, there is no animal shelter in Lawrence County. Now, the county commission is speeding up the search for one.

On Thursday, commissioners voted to accept requests for proposals until July 12th. They will hold another special meeting on July 18th when they will discuss the proposals, and they could decide at that meeting to enter into a contract. County officials said the budget is tight and they want to find a way to keep costs down.

A few weeks ago, the county severed ties with the woman who ran an animal shelter on her property. They gave her $70,000 a year in funding. Commissioners said they are hoping to stay in that pay range and would like to find someone who already has the property.

"We're going to open it up. We've had a lot of inquiries. We just had a few. Hopefully, we can have a long term animal control shelter for Lawrence County," said Prentis Davis, Lawrence County Commission Chairman.

Right now, rescued animals from Lawrence County are being taken to Morgan County for a fee.
