LSP: Speeding motorcyclist dies after hitting car that turned in front of him

SLIDELL, LA (WAFB) -

Authorities said a man was taken to jail after making a turn that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist moving at a high rate of speed Wednesday evening.

Louisiana State Police reported Juan Martinez, 26, of Slidell, faces charges in a crash that left Kiel Rasmussen, 27, also of Slidell, dead.

It happened on US 190 E (Fremaux Avenue) just east of I-10 in Slidell a little before 7 p.m.

Troopers said their initial investigation shows Rasmussen was riding a 2011 Honda motorcycle eastbound at a high rate of speed. They added Martinez was northbound on Brookter Road in a 2004 Hyundai Tiburton and tried to make a left turn onto Fremaux at the same time Rasmussen was approaching.

According to LSP, Rasmussen laid his motorcycle down in an attempt to miss hitting Martinez, but was thrown off the bike and into the driver's side of the sports car. Rasmussen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators reported he was wearing a helmet and they don't believe the drivers were impaired at the time. However, routine blood samples were taken from both drivers and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for toxicology analysis.

Officials said they suspect Rasmussen's excessive speed may be a factor in the wreck and Martinez was arrested because he didn't yield.

Martinez was booked into the St. Tammany Parish jail on charges of failure to yield from a stop sign resulting in a death and no driver's license.
