FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Even though school is out for the summer, students in the Shoals are working closely with school resource officers who keep them safe during the school year.

The Florence Police Department is hosting a summer camp for teens. The SRO summer camp for students is a way to help them become better citizens for their communities.

Over a five day period, teens will not only get an inside look at police duties and responsibilities but they will also hear from other service organizations in the area.

The camp focuses on real life issues teens face every day. Wednesday's focus had more to do with technology; discussing topics such as cyber bullying and sexting.

Officer Steven Robertson said this is the first year the department has hosted the camp and they look forward to making it a yearly event.

"It's very important for the kids at this age to become familiar with us to know we're there to help them and to protect society and to let them know kind of the stuff we do," said Robertson.

The camp is funded through a grant made possible by State Senator Tammy Irons.
