A roadway mess left over from the 2011 tornadoes is finally getting fixed in a major new project in Marshall County.

Approximately 3.6 miles of Buck Island Drive is now about to have a new layer of asphalt. County and state officials gathered at the Marshall County Courthouse to make the announcement Wednesday morning.

State Highway Director John Cooper was in town Tuesday for final plans on the project.

The repaving of Buck Island Drive is estimated to cost $372,000, most of it being paid for by the state. Commissioner R.E. Martin said the matching funds will come from his road department budget.

Martin said the clean-up after the tornadoes made it a road very much in need of repair.

"The big trucks running on it made it a lot worse and it's been patched on top of patches. I'd say it's the roughest road we've got in Marshall County," said Martin.

Martin advises residents to be patient as they begin work because the road is only one way in and out.

Work is expected to begin right after the July 4th holiday.
