HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Tennessee Valley same-sex marriage supporters celebrated the historic United States Supreme Court rulings in Huntsville.

Cheers and applause ripped through the Huntsville's GLBT Advocacy and Youth Services Center on Wednesday.

"We definitely see this as a win," said Madison County Democratic Chairman Clete Wetli. "It's a great first step for equality."

Wetli was among a dozen people gathered at the center. They were already ecstatic when the US Supreme Court ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and went to a new level when California's Prop 8 ruling hit the headlines.

"We go to raising more awareness that we are a united community," said GLBT Advocacy and Youth Services Director James Robinson.

Both Robinson and Wetli said their work won't be done until equality makes it to Alabama.

"Ultimately, what I think will happen is same sex marriage, in terms of federal law, will eventually be deemed constitutional," said Wetli. "I think Alabama will unfortunately be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century."

Alabamians voted to ban gay marriage back in 2006 with overwhelming support. A repeal of the constitutional ban could be challenged through the court system.
