MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Marshall County has found a way to lower the cost of burying the indigent.

After reviewing the opinions of some Attorney Generals, Marshall County has moved from burial as a way to properly dispose of remains, to cremation.

The Marshall County Commission has contracted with Guntersville Memorial to handle the remains of those who cannot afford to pay for their own or a loved one's remains in the county. It is the only crematory in the county.

Commission Chairman James Hutcheson said delivery and cremation costs run around $400 each, a great difference from the approximately $2,000 for the proper burial of remains. Hutcheson said that saves taxpayers a great deal of money, even though they now have to amend their budget due to an unexpected increase in the number of indigent remains this year.

That amendment, in the amount of $2,000, was made by the commission at their meeting on Monday.
