Sovereign citizen found guilty of resisting arrest

Local Probate Judge Tim Mitchell Local Probate Judge Tim Mitchell
MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

An Alabama woman who calls herself a sovereign citizen was found guilty on Monday of resisting arrest.

In November 2011, Donna Jo Kirkland was found guilty of making several bogus liens against top Marshall County officials. Part of her probation was that she remove these liens from the probate judge's office, but she never did.

Kirkland had a hearing Monday, just over a month after she was picked up and charged with resisting arrest on her probation violation warrant. The judge found her guilty of resisting arrest after a Grant police officer picked her up last month.  She received a 30 day sentence plus a $50 fine and court costs.

Prosecutors sought to have her probation revoked since she failed to remove more than two and a half dozen liens against people, liens she had agreed to have removed back in November 2011 as a part of her probation.

Local Probate Judge Tim Mitchell said filing bogus liens can cause someone quite a problem.

With the help of her attorney, all of the liens filed by Kirkland were released last week.  The judge ordered Kirkland be released on time served.
