Attorneys for alleged cartel hitman want media banned from hearings

Posted: Updated:
LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Attorneys for a man who allegedly confessed to multiple murders want the media banned from upcoming hearings for a Lawrence County murder investigation.

Jose Manuel Martinez is accused of killing Jose Ruiz, Decatur, earlier this year.

Lawrence County Sheriff's investigators said after his arrest, Martinez confessed to dozens of murders.

Investigators report they've connected him to 10 murders in California and two in Florida.

According to authorities, Martinez said he killed while collecting drug-related debts in retaliation for things done to his family members, and that he even claims he murdered child sex predators in vigilante-style killings.

A motion filed in Lawrence County District Court requests the judge ban all media outlets from pretrial hearings. The motion states pretrial publicity has already been prejudicial. The judge has not ruled on that request.

Defense attorneys also requested bond for Martinez. The judge will take up that issue during a July 10 hearing.
