HARTSELLE, AL (WAFF) -

A warning for college students: there are scammers out there trying to pick your pockets.

Tyler Dodd of Hartselle is going to Calhoun Community College and working part-time at Cracker Barrel. He recently got a call saying he was being awarded a $7,500 government grant.

When he was told to go to the nearest Western Union to pay a $290 deposit, he and his mom became suspicious, so he asked the caller what company they worked for.

"I don't think he specifically said who they were," said Dodd. "He ran through the same information. ‘The government selected you,' basically dodging the question."

Dodd's mother told him to say they were going to call the Better Business Bureau to check the legitimacy of the call and that Tyler would call back.

"He said, ‘OK, and we'll hold your money for you.' So she looked it up and sure enough, it was a scam."

Michele Mason with the North Alabama Better Business Bureau said this is one of the top ten scams they deal with. It's been around for over a year now.

Mason reminds consumers: you should never have to pay money to receive money.
