The new Arts and Entertainment District in Huntsville opened Thursday night.

City leaders launched the city's new Arts and Entertainment District Thursday night with a celebration on Southside Square at 5 p.m. The Green Market farmers market opened earlier at 4 p.m., and the arts stroll began at 4:30 p.m.

The district featured music and other types of entertainment. Also, for the first time in Huntsville, bars and restaurants within the Arts and Entertainment District were allowed to sell alcohol to-go and people could carry the drinks outside in plastic cups.

"This was long overdue," said Amendment 21 Owner, John Robinson. "The people who like to get out and stroll around like to have some variety and this will give everybody the chance to come and have a drink or two and if they want to go roam around and go to constitution hall or look at the rest of downtown, that's what it's for."

The district is actually made up of two areas. The Quigley District stretches from the courthouse square to Big Spring Park and includes the Von Braun Center. The other area is called the Meridian District, which is smaller and centers around bars and restaurants near Bud Cramer Park.

A Huntsville Police officer said the relaxed rules in the districts could be problematic.

"Our main concerns are underage drinking, alcohol being brought into the entertainment district that is not being sold there an then making sure that everybody understands basically the layout of the district and where they are supposed to be," said Captain Thomas Presley.

Presley encourages everyone who goes to downtown Huntsville during the district hours to carry their identification.

This summer, the district will be open on Thursdays and Fridays from 5 to 10 p.m.
