FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Lauderdale County moves a step closer to getting a new hospital.

On Wednesday, the State's Certificate of Need Board approved Regional Care's proposal to build a new 280 bed hospital in east Florence.

The approval is about 20 beds short of it's 300 bed proposal but hospital officials are excited about the decision. The new facility would replace ECM Hospital on the other side of town.

Wednesday's approval comes on the heels of a judge's decision last month recommending the new hospital be built with fewer beds and no to a cancer center.

From here the hospital will have to now meet with the Healthcare Authority of Lauderdale County and the city of Florence to discuss the approval.

The original agreement was for a 300 bed facility. If the board approves the 280 bed facility, the proposal will move forward and construction will begin.
