DOUGLAS, AL (WAFF) -

A councilman in the Marshall County town of Douglas is making a push to get some abandoned buildings in the town cleaned up.

Three buildings in the town have been vacant for more than five years.

Councilman Bo Bohannon feels two could be restored and rented out, but a third building may be too far gone.

Bohannon said they plan to work with the owners to see what can be done but realize that the city does have the option to clean them up.

"We don't want to feel like we've got to go hold a gun to these people and we don't want to force anybody to force them to tear their building down even though the state does give local municipalities the right to claim it as a nuisance and have the building removed," said Bohannon.

Bohannon said a committee of area business leaders has been assembled to address the issue. He said it will also be discussed at their next city council meeting July 8th.
