CHEROKEE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A nineteen year-old Georgia man drowned at a Cherokee County nature preserve Saturday night.

Ricardo Perez of Rome GA was found in nine feet of water just before 9:00 p.m. Authorities say Perez and his friends attempted to swim across Little River when he slipped under the water. Others along the river called 911.

DeKalb County Sheriffs and Ambulance Services assisted four other agencies in the recovery effort.

Little River Canyon Superintendent Gail Bishop said this is the first drowning incident in 2013, although there have been four additional rescues along the river this year.

The National Park Service warns people not to cross Little River because of the underlying force of water currents generated by movement down rocky falls and ledges.
