UAH students will feel pinch of tuition increase

Huntsville, AL -

Tuition is going up again at all three schools in the University of Alabama school system. This is probably not the news students at UAH were hoping to hear.

As usual, rising costs are to blame. This year, it is an increased contribution to the teacher retirement program. UAH spokesperson Ray Garner explained, "We try to maintain low costs as much as possible, but sometimes there are circumstances that are kind of beyond our control."

Friday's tuition hike approved by the board of trustees brings a 4.5% increase. That's an extra $199 per semester.

"For $200, I'm going to have to eat at Taco Bell a lot more," said one student. "The dollar menu at McDonald's is going to be my friend."

But school officials are touting this year's tuition hike as an improvement. Last year's hike was 8.6% They said the new hike is the lowest increase they have seen in five or six years.

So what is the difference students will see? We compared last year's figures with this year. The 8.6% increase in 2012 brought tuition to $8,794. The approved 4.5% increase will bring that figure to $9,192.

That isn't a huge jump, but no doubt some students will feel the pinch.

"This could have been a whole lot worse," said Garner. "It could have been a fifteen percent increase, as some schools have implemented."

That's one way to look at the bright side. Another silver lining: a recent report named UAH as the best school in the state for financial return on investment. In other words, UAH graduates make a higher starting salary than others.
