FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

An alert for families in the Shoals: thieves are turning to technology in an attempt to steal your money.

Investigators say the scammers claim to be with a number of different agencies, such as public utilities and police departments, even the federal government.

The caller will ask for personal information and then suggest that you could face serious punishment if you do not comply with their demands. Officials say most people end up giving out their personally identifiable information out of fear caused by the call, thus becoming a victim.

Brad Holmes of the Florence Police Department said, "We encourage you that if you get a phone call you think is suspicious, ask for a call back number, call your local police department, and let us assist you in determining whether or not that is a legitimate call or a scam."

You can also contact the Better Business Bureau to report a scam or learn more about possible scams.
