LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Two people have been arrested and charged with a total of thirteen counts of possessing fighting dogs.

Thirteen pit bulls were found chained on a property on CR 41 in Lauderdale County.

The dogs were found chained to car axles and the limited shelter they had was makeshift doghouses converted from barrels. There was evidence of mobile fighting and exercising rings, as well as gloves and syringes used for medically treating the dogs.

Investigators also found bones in a burn pile at the back of the property.

A veterinarian examined the thirteen living animals and determined they had been used for fighting. They were malnourished and underweight, and had scars and cuts on their bodies.

It is believed that this possible dog fighting ring had been in operation for as long as seven years.

Dereus Lamar Qualls and Quinton Lashawn Butler were arrested and have been released on bail.

The dogs have been moved to a rescue group in Atlanta that specializes in pit bull rehabilitation.
